Who said going against the grain was bad for the dog's coat. It's an old myth. Watch this and learn why. Going with the grain on a coat like this will require you to clip, back brush, clip, back brush, clip, back brush, clip and back brush. Why? Just reverse and be done with it. Just use a blade longer the first time you try this.

Notice that the snap on comb is not touching the dog for most strokes. When the blade or comb is "floated" just above the skin, we call this "skimming".  There is no stone fast rule that states that clipper blades must rest on the dog's skin so when you need more hair length, don't change blades. Lift the clipper away from the skin to the desired cutting length and "skim" to the desired length. The suction from the vac will help hold the hair in place for "skimming".   Skimming works best on fluff coats (poodle, etc.) and other coats by moving against the flow of the hair.  This technique can replace much of your thinning shear work and do so in a way that is much faster.

Remember, this is an advanced technique.  Practice this technique on dogs that are scheduled to have short clips downs. If you have an "oooops!", you won't have to worry about the dog's finished clip.
